About Nigerian Polytechnics (Brief History)
Polytechnics in Nigeria started in the pre-independent Nigeria era when the training of technical personnel was done mainly by companies and organizations. The Nigeria government then saw a need in 1952 to set up polytechnic institutions when it first established the Yaba Higher College of Nigerian of Arts, Science, and Technology, this college also had branches in Enugu, Ibadan, and Zaria (eastern, western, and northern part of Nigeria).
Nigeria Polytechnics are managed by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) which controls the polytechnics.
About NBTE
The National Board for Technical Education (NTBE) was established by Act No 9 of 11 July 1977 as a board of education which superintends, coordinates, and oversees educational programs offered by technical institutions at secondary, polytechnic, and mono-technic levels through an accreditation process
National Board for Technical Education (NTBE) was instituted with the aim of “providing standardized minimum guide curricula for Technical and Vocational Education and Training”.
The major Functions of the National Board for Technical Education (NTBE) are;
- “Monitoring of polytechnics;
- Giving guidelines for setting up polytechnics;
- Prevention of the establishment of illegal campuses, and implementing
appropriate sanctions; - Accreditation of courses;
- Approval of courses and programmes;
- Maintenance of minimum academic standards”.
