How Is the JAMB Score Calculated (Explanation)
Are you among the candidates or persons asking the question of how the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) scores or grades its exam? On this page, you will find the right answer to that question.
Each year thousands of JAMB registered Students write Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) Exams which are conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The examination is conducted to determine the admission of students into higher institutions.
After the conduct of the year’s examination (UTME/DE), the board (JAMB) meets and deliberates on the cut-off mark for Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education. Meanwhile, some institutions require higher grades or scores from candidates (Jambites).
Before the deliberation and conclusion of each year’s Cut-Off Mark, it happens that the exams has already been marked and graded whereby some candidates do not score up to the minimum required Cut-Off Mark, thereby leaving them with no choice than to go for the institution that suits there JAMB Score, or in some cases they might not even meet up to any of the JAMB institution Cut-Off Mark.

The question is How does JAMB calculate and scores UTME?
Below is the answer to that question.
How JAMB Calculates and Scores UTME/DE Exams?
2.1 How Jamb Calculates Score in Use of English and Other UTME Subjects.
The total number of English questions in Jamb UTME is 60. To Calculate your Jamb Score in Use of English.
For example: Let’s say in Use of English the questions are 60 and Ada answered 40 questions correctly to calculate Ada’s score = multiply the number of correctly answered questions (40) by their various marks.
Solution:
In section A:
COMPREHENSION PASSAGES 5 questions 3 marks each, Ada answered only 1 question correctly (3 marks).
CLOZE PASSAGE 10 questions 2 marks each, Ada answered only 5 questions correctly (10 marks).
READING TEXT 10 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered only 7 questions correctly (7 marks).
Ada’s mark in Section A, 3 +10 + 7 = 20 marks
In section B:
SENTENCE INTERPRETATION 5 questions 2 marks each, Ada answered only 3 questions correctly (6 marks)
ANTONYMS 5 questions 2 marks each, Ada answered only 3 questions correctly (6 marks)
SYNONYMS 5 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered only 2 questions correctly (2 marks)
BASIC GRAMMER 10 questions 2 marks each, Ada answered only 8 questions correctly (16 marks)
Ada’s mark in Section B, 6 + 6 + 2 + 16 = 30 marks
In section C:
VOWELS 2 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered all correctly (2 marks)
CONSONANTS 2 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered all correctly (2 marks)
RHYMES 2 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered all correctly (2 marks)
WORD STRESS 2 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered all correctly (2 marks)
EMPHATIC STRESS 2 questions 1 mark each, Ada answered all correctly (2 marks)
Ada’s mark in Section C: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 marks
Ada’s Total Mark in Use of English is 20 + 30 + 10 = 60 marks (sum of section A B C marks)
2.2. How Jamb Calculates Score for Other UTME Subjects.
Except for English (Use of English) in Jamb UTME which has 60 questions in number, any other UTME subject has 40 questions.
Note. Each of these questions is graded or scored 2.5 marks. Therefore 2.5 marks per question multiplied by 40 = 100marks
That is to say, the other three UTME subjects carries 300marks (40 x 2.5 + 40 x 2.5 + 40 x 2.5) = 300 marks, plus (+) English 100 marks = 400 marks
To Calculate the Score for the other three UTME Subjects.
Let’s say Ada answered 30 questions correctly in mathematics, physics, and chemistry respectively. To calculate Ada’s score in each of these UTME subjects is the same as = multiplying the number of correctly answered questions for each of the subjects (30) by their various marks (2.5).
Solution:
In MATHEMATICS 40 questions 2.5 marks each, Ada answered only 30 questions correctly (75 marks)
In PHYSICS 40 questions 2.5 marks each, Ada answered only 30 questions correctly (75 marks)
In CHEMISTRY 40 questions 2.5 marks each, Ada answered only 30 questions correctly (75 marks)
Ada’s total mark in these three UTME subjects is 75 + 75 + 75 = 225 marks.
Lastly, what will be Ada’s Jamb UTME Score?
Ada’s UTME Score = total of all the four UTME subject Marks
Use of English = 60 Marks
Mathematics = 75 Marks
Physics = 75 Marks
Chemistry = 75 Marks
UTME TOTAL SCORE = 60 + 75 + 75 + 75 = 285
Ada’s JAMB UTME Score is 285 over 400
