The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ordered its union members to embark on a nationwide strike as declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke ASUU President, issued a letter to ASUU Zonal Coordinators and branch chairpersons nationwide directing them to comply with joining the NLC in the strike.

Yes, ASUU joins the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on strike. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ordered its union members to embark on a nationwide strike as declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Why Did ASUU Join the Strike
ASUU is an affiliate union of the Nigeria Labour Congress, and according to the Union President Prof. Osodeke’s letter, He stated; “As an affiliate of NLC, all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the union. Zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons should immediately mobilise our members to participate in the action,”

What are ASUU Demands from the Federal Government?
Apart from ASUU joining the NLC in the ongoing strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has other unresolved demands from the federal government. Earlier before now the union and the Nigerian government have been in debates over the former unreached agreement and demands of ASUU.
ASUU has also raised awareness over “the deepening socio-economic” crises in the country, which the union cited as a concerned issue that needs implementation of “neo-liberal economic policies” by the present government of Nigeria Presidency.
ASUU Demands Include (Major Demands);
A few of ASUU’s major demands from the Nigeria government are as follows ⇓
- Revitalisation of the universities
- Autonomy and academic freedom
- Removal of federal universities from the imposed Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The Academic Staff Union of Universities also stated that the “little gains of the 2022 strike” which is budgeted for the funding for revitalisation and the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) of N470 billion have yet to be activated due to the non-release of the allocated funds.
Furthermore, the union (ASUU) beckoned on the federal government to, quicken ‘the process of concluding the renegotiation exercise in line with the fundamental principles of the Professor Nimi Briggs’ Committee and release the funds allocated for the payment of the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
IS NLC on Strike? – Why Did NLC Embark on Strike?
Yes, the Nigerian Labour Congress is currently on strike. Earlier on Monday, 13th November NLC announced the starting of industrial action, stating that the union will take action following the brutalisation of its NLC President, Joe Ajaero, which happened on the 1st of November in Imo State.
